OPENING OF “ARRIVAL CITY” - Ausstellungen und Podiumsdiskussionen

Erstellt von Art-Lab Berlin, bearbeitet von: QM-Team/KK | Archiv

Beginn Freitag, 20. April 2018

The project Arrival City offers a forum for international and newly arrived artists in Berlin and seeks to investigate questions pertaining to artistic relocation. The term “arrival city” was coined by the journalist and writer Doug Saunders in his book Arrival City (2011).Saunders described cities and neighbourhoods which had been shaped by migration and the stories of their inhabitants. Although he did not deny challenges, his conclusion was overall positive as he highlighted the vitality that the newcomers brought to their new homes. With this project we would like to take up this idea and reflect on the city as a form of “cultural laboratory” as a space of co-existence of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. The project will be presented in four exhibitions and two panel discussions, organized throughout 2018.

The project is organized and curated by Charlotte Bank and Salah Saouli

The opening event will take place on Friday, April 20, at 7 pm

Panel discussion: Exile as Worldmaking

The panel discussion will focus on the changes in the city of Berlin, as it has become increasingly attractive for international artists. Among these is also a considerable number from the Middle East, who have relocated due to situations of conflict or a general worsening of working conditions in their home countries. The speakers of the panel discussion will talk about the numerous challenges that artists face when relocating, but also the chances offered by new environments.
